In a landmark judgement, the Delhi High Court has put a ban on sale of online medicines by e-pharmacists across India. The court has directed both the Central and State Governments to immediately implement the order.
The judgement was given by a bench comprising of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao on December 13 while hearing a PIL filed by Mr Zaheer Ahmed. Ahmed is a Delhi-based dermatologist who had
contested that lakhs of medicines were being sold on the internet every day without any regulation posing a huge risk to people.
The Union Health Ministry had introduced draft rules on sale of drugs by e-pharmacies in September this year so as to regulate online sale of medicines and ensure that patients get access to genuine drugs from authentic online portals.
