INX Media founder Indrani Mukerjea under I-T department scanner

Indrani Mukerjea, founder of INX Media and an accused in Sheena Bora murder case, is to be quizzed by Income Tax department for money laundering on Thursday.
The deputy director of Income Tax (Investigation) took permission on Wednesday from special CBI court to record the statement of Indrani under Section 131 of Income Tax Act. It will interrogate Indrani today at Byculla Jail, Mumbai.

In 2007, Indrani founded the company with her husband Peter Mukerjea and she got into a criminal conspiracy with Karti Chidambaram, son of P Chidambaram to get foreign investments and to get escaped from consequences for not having the necessary approvals from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board. While Karti Chidambaram denies all the allegation of bribe taken from Indrani.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have been investigating on various sources of the Indrani’s finances and the Income Tax department wants to question about joint accounts held by her and Peter in New Zealand.

As per investigation of ED, the couple allegedly siphoned GBP 90 million in the INX media deal.
In 2017, ED said in its application to special CBI court, “The couple amassed Illicit funds and siphoned it off to overseas unknown destination and then transferred them back in India and UK through Mauritius-based foreign investors. It is also revealed that Rabin Mukerjea, son of Peter, handles the funds of Peter and Indrani in New Zealand, which were held in the form of bonds.”

A letter of Foreign Investment Promotion Board(FIPB’s),dated May 31, 2007 states that INX Media allowed to get a foreign investment for Rs 46.2 million approximately as total investment inflow, including premium but it received Rs. 3,053.6 million as investment between August 22, 2007 and June 12, 2008.
