Typhoon Kammuri hit Philippines with fierce winds and heavy rains as thousands of people had to take refuge in shelters and the capital Manila decided to temporarily shut its international airport over safety concerns.
According to forecasters Kammuri remained powerful with sustained winds of up to 155 kilometres/hour, and maximum gusts of 235 kmph.
More than 3 lakh people had been evacuated in the central Bicol region.
The Philippines is hit by about of 20 storms and typhoons annually, killing hundreds and putting people in disaster-prone areas in a state of constant poverty.
