India’s Human Development Index(HDI) rose to 0.647 points from 0.6 40 points in 2018 as it was ranked 129 out of 189 countries surveyed by United Nations Development Programme(UNDP). This marks a minor improvement in India’s ranking at the Human Development Index as the country was ranked 130 in 2018. Though India’s HDI scores 0.647 points when inequality is deducted the HDI falls to 0.4 77 points measuring a loss of 26.3 % due to inequality. India shows higher inequality level compared to the average of South Asia where the inequality stood at 25.9 percent. Soko Noda, the UNDP Resident India Representative stressed on the importance of focusing on basic amenities such as housing and quality higher education for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Nudo also stressed the importance of Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat for equitable growth in the country. Norway, Switzerland and Ireland secured first second and third places in the 2019 HDI. India was able to lift 27. 1 crore people out of poverty between 2005-06 to 2015-16 though it still houses about 28% of world’s total number of multidimensionally poor people.
